Our school has held in the “OM” exercise or process many times. “OM” is the abbreviation for “Odyssey of the Mind”. It is an educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students. Students apply their own creative energies and imagination to solve problems that ranging from the construction of mechanical devices to the presentation of their analyses of their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition.
Odyssey of the Mind is a competitive program, but it is nothing like a typical sporting event. The competitive element encourages students to be the best that they can be, but it is always a friendly competition. Kids learn from and even cheer on their competitors. Odyssey of the Mind is not a college bowl or a competition about knowledge. It’s all about creativity and problem solving, an often overlooked element in the intellectual growth and development of students. Kids are rewarded more for how they apply their knowledge, skills and talents, and not for coming up with the right answer. In fact, in Odyssey of the Mind problems, there is none correct answer. Ever. The “friendly” competitive aspect encourages students to be the best that they can be.
